For the first time in its 90-year history, Monin, S.A. will offer its
popular line of imported specialty flavorings in plastic, in addition to the
traditional bottle.
To assist its U.S. subsidiary, Monin Inc. of Clearwater, Fla., with the
historic packaging alternative, it enlisted the services of Saxco
International Inc. of Horsham, Pa., world-wide packaging specialists.
Saxco already was supplying our signature glass bottles through Anchor
Glass which are used exclusively for our core business of imported
flavorings marketed to specialty coffee operators and gourmet retailers,
explains Bill Lombardo, chief executive officer of Monins U.S.
subsidiary. All of our flavorings are extracted in France and exported to
the United States.
The reason we needed to add a 1-liter PET bottle was to address the
requirements of our new line of flavorings which were being targeted to the
food service industry, including restaurants, colleges, universities and
hotels, Lombardo states. With this addition, there are many more
applications for our new product line.
Saxco consulted and assisted Monin in developing a private mold plastic
bottle, closely resembling the signature glass version which had been in use
for a very long time. It sourced the new bottles through Pet Pak of Toronto,
Canada, a division of Amcor Ltd.
We not only were most successful in achieving the desired appearance,
but we were able to accomplish it within a short six-week time span,
states Herbert L. Sachs, president of Saxco International.
In all, Monin will bottle 18 flavorings in the new plastic containers,
ranging from the traditional fruits such as strawberry, raspberry and peach
to the more exotic mojito mint and sangria mix. They will be marketing the
new flavorings line throughout the United States and in 16 countries in
North and South America.
Furthermore, Lombardo explains, by using plastic, we are able to
offer our new flavorings in four-bottle packs rather than 12 packages which
were standard for glass. The labels and closures were designed in-house
in France and assembled in the United States.
